The Story of Carnival is an exhibition by Opal22, created in collaboration with Highcross Leicester, celebrating the history, heritage and cultural significance of Caribbean Carnival.
Tracing Carnival’s journey from its roots in the Caribbean to the vibrant celebrations seen across the UK today, the exhibition explores how music, costume, dance and community have made Carnival a powerful expression of identity, creativity and resilience. Alongside this wider history, the exhibition highlights Leicester’s own Carnival story and the people who helped build one of the UK’s longest-running Caribbean Carnivals.
Through archival photographs, historical interpretation and community storytelling, The Story of Carnival explores the traditions, influences and people behind Carnival’s enduring legacy. Visitors can discover the origins of Carnival, its development as a celebration of freedom and cultural identity, and the ways it continues to bring communities together today.
A central focus is the life and legacy of Elvy Morton, founder of Leicester Carnival, whose vision helped establish an annual event that has become an important part of the city’s cultural calendar. The exhibition celebrates the organisers, performers and communities who have sustained Carnival across generations while reflecting on its continuing importance in contemporary Britain.
