Britain Re-Written: Discuss. Decode. Decolonise. is a Black History Month event that explores the colonial legacies embedded within Britain’s archives, museums and public spaces. Hosted by Opal22 in collaboration with leading cultural and academic voices, the event creates space for meaningful conversations about who shapes our collective memory and how more inclusive histories can be told.
Bringing together students, educators, heritage professionals, creatives and members of the wider community, the evening invites audiences to examine how historical narratives are constructed, whose voices have been prioritised, and how communities can play an active role in rethinking the stories that define Britain’s past and present.
About the Event
The programme features keynote talks, conversation and audience engagement led by two influential voices in discussions on race, history and representation.
Author, broadcaster and cultural commentator Emma Dabiri joins Opal22 CEO Tara Munroe for an in-conversation exploring how colonial narratives continue to shape museums, archives and cultural institutions, and what it means to challenge and reimagine those legacies today.
The evening also includes a keynote address from Professor Robert Beckford, award-winning academic, theologian and filmmaker, whose work explores race, culture and social justice. Drawing on his research, Professor Beckford examines the lasting presence of colonialism and Eurocentrism within museum spaces and the opportunities for more inclusive approaches to heritage.
Alongside the talks, guests can enjoy welcome drinks, light refreshments and opportunities to connect with local creatives, educators and community leaders through informal networking.
